The great art treasure Ajanta is well known all over the world for it's exquisite sculptures and beautiful rock paintings. Ajanta caves are records that shows the development of Art of a civilized mankind lived in this region, and the expert workmanship is evident. The Ajanta paintings are significant for the very most reason that they are the earliest surviving paintings of India and the earliest representation of Indian painting tradition available to the Indians.

In this power point slide, Dr.Swaminathan describes in very detail the characteristics of the sculptures, and the paintings, the location of the Ajanta caves with related historical information, different phases and periods of these cave paintings and sculptures, the rediscovery of this great world monument in 1817, the layout of the caves with description and site map, the cave architecture, the themes of the paintings and sculptures, variety of decorative floral, animal and geometrical design paintings and their uniqueness. This document also includes the interesting form of art one can find in Ajantha where the narration arranged in the form of long canvass, progressing from episode to episode. Very interestingly Dr.Swaminathan has included details on the preparation of wall and the surface for starting the painting work.

Marvelous paintings and photos are included in each slides with detail descriptions. This document presents lots of information for anyone who likes to have orientation about Ajantha caves and its treasures.
